During the Fall and Winter seasons, many people pine for the warmer months and use this time indoors to plan vacations for the Summer. A Ph.D. graduate from the University of Pennsylvania, Erasmus Kloman has served in the wartime Office of Strategic Services, the Central Intelligence Agency, Department of State, and Foreign Policy Research Institute at Penn, and as a corporate executive for AMAX and IBM. He was a Senior Research Associate at the National Academy of Public Administration from which he retired in 1985. Since his retirement, Mr. Kloman has pursued a dual career as painter and writer. He has studied painting at the Corcoran, American University, the Studio School and the Art League in Alexandria, Virginia. In 1988, he held a one-man show at the Cosmos Club. He is the author of Sojourn in Gascony: Pleasures of the Palette and Apartment in Paris: Renting, Roaming, Wining, and Dining. He and his wife, Suzanne, live in Chestertown, Maryland and travel to France every year.

Don't forget your vacation insurance before you take off for any travel.

I am very serious when it comes to insurance, I do not want to take any chances, I grew up in a family with my mother as a sole bread winner, my Dad passed away when I was 10 years old without any insurance. Life was very very difficult then.

So the same goes with vacation insurance too!

It can cost you an extra few thousands of dollars if the cruise or tour operator goes bankrupt, or if you need to shorten your vacation due to sickness or injury.

Quick Tip

The biggest myth would be that your normal health insurance covers you when you are away, or that since many travelers visit an area or region, access to medical care is easy or affordable.

Here's a quick guide to understanding what a good vacation insurance should cover for any travel.

1. Travel Curtailment

If you or an immediate family member becomes seriously ill or is injured during the vacation most vacation insurance companies would reimburse you for the unused portion of the vacation.

2. Travel Cancellation

You would be reimbursed if the cruise line or tour operator goes out of business. It would also reimburse you if you have to cancel the vacation due to sickness, a death in the family or other calamity listed in the insurance policy.

Travel cancellation is very different from a Cancellation Waiver that many cruise and tour operators offer. Waivers are relatively inexpensive. They provide coverage if you have to cancel the trip, but they have many restrictions.

They must be purchased when you book the trip and will usually not cover you immediately before departure. Most importantly, waiver is not insurance.

2. Personal liability

Personal Liability is important in case of legal liability, arising out of one's negligence in causing a third party injury (or death) and/or third party property damage.

Some traveler insurance companies even insure against the loss or theft of golfing equipment and laptops.

3. Luggage/Baggage/Flight Delay

This feature comes along with a "Time" excess, meaning that the traveler insurance companies only compensate when the delay exceeds a certain time frame. The limit for loss of luggage/baggage/flight varies, usually with a cap for individual items.

4. Emergency & Medical Assistance and Information Service

Look for those 24-hour services that offer information on visa requirements, foreign exchange, weather forecasts and medical advice et cetera.

Emergency evacuation is very helpful indeed for inexperienced travelers or travelers with medical conditions or for those who are traveling to more remote and less traveled places.

These service centers may also offer emergency assistance in the form of embassy, legal, interpreter and medical referrals.

Most vacation insurance policies would compensate a couple of hundred dollars for each day of hospitalization up to the maximum limit indicated in their respective packages.

This is solely to compensate the traveler for the number of days spent in a hospital overseas and should not be mistaken as hospital or medical reimbursement, which takes care of the hospital and ward charges.

4. Accidental Death insurance

Personal accident coverage, which is to compensate the insured for permanent or temporary disablement or death as a result of an accident.

2 Main Types of Vacation Insurance

Annual Policy

Most traveler insurance companies offer vacation insurance on annual basis as well as per trip basis. Annual policies cover unlimited trips made by the insured during the entire year provided that each trip does not exceed a certain number of days, usually 90 days.

No declaration is required.

For frequent flyers, this type of cover would be most ideal in terms of cost and convenience.

Family Vacation Insurance

Family packages are also designed to cater for immediate families traveling together. Definition of immediate families would mean you, your spouse and your children.

Family vacation insurance are usually priced lower premium than if individual insurance policies were to be taken up for the whole family.

Special Features ALERT!

Go for vacation insurance policies come with higher deductible and this translates into lower premium.

The worst case scenario is you may end up having to bear the first $40 or $50 of every claim that you make.

Deductible: (Also known as Excess in UK, NZ, AU) This is the amount that the insured must pay before the vacation insurance starts paying for your claim.

This may be an annual amount, an amount for the duration of the policy, or an amount for each incident. Choose the latter.

For those of you who intend to engage in water or winter sports during your vacation, it would be wise to take up your insurers who offer free coverage for such activities.

Some traveler insurance companies may charge an additional premium for this extension, so it is better to check this point before you effect your cover.

Unfortunately, the definition of water sports in the typical travel policy does not include scuba diving.

Not surprisingly, bungee jumping is excluded from most policies. Watch out for age limits imposed by some traveler insurance companies, meaning that persons exceeding a certain age are excluded from their coverage. But if you belong to this elderly group, fret not.

There are traveler insurance companies that do not impose any age limit and offer the same coverage at no additional premium loading.

A unique coverage that is being offered in the traveler insurance market is the "Car Rental Excess". This feature takes care of the excess amount that the insured normally has to bear (under the motor policy taken up at car rental companies) in the event of damage to the rented vehicle while driving overseas.

Price of Vacation Insurance also known as Premium - Premium Computation

For "per-trip" policies, the premium payable hinges considerably on the number of days of travel, the country of destination and choice of plan.

For example, if you are from Europe, a vacation in USA warrants a much higher premium than a trip within Europe for the same number of days.

Some traveler insurance companies provide the option of higher limits of coverage at of course, a higher premium.

If price is of concern, it is advisable to keep on hand the premium schedule from a few traveler insurance companies for comparison before you activate your insurance before each trip.

Claim Procedure

I consider this the most important aspect of buying a vacation insurance.

All traveler insurance companies will require you to lodge your claims within a certain time frame. You would be required to complete and submit a claim form, which can be obtained from the traveler insurance company.

In almost all instances, your claims must be accompanied by relevant documents, such as medical receipts for medical reimbursement or hospital cash; a police report for loss of money or personal documents; an official letter from the airline in cases of flight or lugguage delay and loss of lugguage if within custody of the airline.

In all cases, call up and inform your traveler insurance company immediately for necessary advice.

There you are... now with a basic knowledge of vacation insurance, you are equipped to choose the best suited to your travel needs and you are all set to fly!

Pain and injury avoidance techniques for snowboarding are invaluable but not well known. If you know how, you can avoid the two biggest mistakes that first time snowboarders make. A positive experience your first few times out will make you more likely to stick out the hard times until you learn enough to really have fun!

"There's no reason that adults shouldn't snowboard and have as much fun as kids" says self-proclaimed Snowboard Evangelist Lauren Traub Teton who admits to being "in her 40s". "I have been riding a snowboard for four years, and am having the most fun of my life!"

She feels that the only thing stopping "oldsters" (in their mid-30s and up) from embracing snowboarding in a big way are the inevitable hard falls experienced during the short steep learning curve. She says "there are easy ways to avoid the pain. They are just not well known."

The reason "snowboard pain avoidance" is not more widely discussed has to do with the history of snowboarding. To some snowboarders, pain and injury are cool. This is obvious if you the read the hundreds of war stories on snowboard websites.

This viewpoint has its roots in the fact that snowboarding is stylistically a descendant of skateboarding and embraces some of the same traditions. For example, doing a grab, where the rider reaches down and grabs the board while airborne, is more of a necessity in skating than in snowboarding, because the skateboard is not attached to the feet. But grabs have morphed into a popular trick and a way to show style in snowboarding too.

The other tradition that has carried over from skating is the tradition of pain. In skateboarding, injury from accidental impact with the hard ground is a common occurrence and gives a skater bragging rights (as well as bruises and breaks.). A lot of skaters are also snowboarders, and so the tradition of absorbing pain as part of "paying dues" remains.

Another factor keeping some adults away from snowboarding may be the reputation for wildness on the slopes that snowboarders have. That probably comes from the fact that when the equipment was first invented, it was technologically primitive, with little ability to steer or stop. That's how snowboarding got its image as an extreme sport and snowboarders got their reputation as outlaws of the snow. Now snowboards have evolved technologically into precision devices that can turn and stop easily, when operated under control.

With older snowboarders hitting the slopes, the culture of injury and pain has outlived it's origins. Adults don't equate injuries with status. People who start riding as adults want to stay upright and uninjured. Some skiers switch over because it seems like more fun and less stress on the knees. Again, the goal is to stay whole!

I learned by trial, error and luck how to avoid injury. In fact, a fine young gentleman working at the guest services desk on Whistler Mountain (B.C.) offered to let me borrow his Rollerblade wrist guards and knee pads, one day when I was learning, and I was hooked on safety and comfort from that moment.

Don't make the two biggest mistakes new snowboarders often make when you do decide to take up this wonderful sport. To be safe, comfortable, and happy, you MUST

1. Take a lesson given by a professional your first time out.

and

2. You MUST wear padding, on your knees, butt, and wrists.

Come now, why try to reinvent the wheel? If you want to learn to snowboard, then a snowboard lesson with a trained instructor will teach you IMPORTANT basic snowboarding skills that you will use every day for the rest of your riding life.

So learn them right, right from the start. Forget about teaching yourself how to get on and off a lift safely on a board. This is what teachers are for.

And the padding is a must because falling is an inevitable part of the learning process. You WILL fall at first. But if you are padded properly, you will not have to hurt yourself. And don't chuck the padding once you have mastered the basics. You will need it when you progress to jumping and tricks!

March 3, 2004 -- Ride Like a Girl (RLAG) is a boarding series focusing on snowboarding and skateboarding events specifically for girls. The purpose of all RLAG events is to encourage, motivate and inspire girls to get involved and stay involved in board sports. We accomplish this by focusing on a "community" attitude, recognizing that the support and interaction with others is a powerful thing. These events give girls a safe and comfortable environment to try a new sport or to continue pursuing one they already love. Ride Like a Girl is the only series of its kind in Canada.

RLAG started in the summer of 2001 with an all female skateboarding competition and workshop in Oakville, Ontario. Since then RLAG has hosted similar events each summer at skate parks in the greater Toronto area. With the great growth and progression of these skateboarding events over the years, the need to expand into snowboarding events came to be in high demand by many of the participants, spectators and supporters. In January 2004 RLAG was able to work with the Association of Ontario Snowboarders to create these great events for the winter season.

It's that time of year again: Time for the family vacation. It's a good time to rethink some things like perfectionism, expectations, and the meaning of the word "vacation."

First of all, we call it a "vacation," but if you're the parent, it isn't going to be one for you. In fact you're likely to work harder than you would at home, so why not call it "The Children's Vacation." Children don't need a vacation for rest and relaxation; in fact they're likely to rev up for vacations. If you're looking for rest and relaxation, plan your own vacation for another time.

Here are some things to keep in mind as you plan and take the family vacation that can keep you from unrealistic expectations which will erode your experience:

1.Because kids accelerate with new experiences and fun times, plan to GO rested; don't plan on COMING HOME rested.

2.Consider options for help with the kids. Many resorts and cruise lines offer supervised programs for children where they can meet new friends. Or take along a mother's helper, older niece or nephew, or grandmother. It's more fun for all.

3.Plan ahead for the unpredictable. Use your Emotional Intelligence to relax, being flexible and creative, rather than tightening up and getting rigid. Testing the limits in each new circumstance is normal. You can handle it as long as you aren't surprised by it.

4.Prepare for the predictable � high spirits, boredom, and fights with siblings. Deal with them the same way you do at home. Don't blame each other for the misbehavior of the kids. Just cope with it.

5.If you intend to have a great time together, don't let anything get in your way. There's no reason why a visit to the ER should "ruin your vacation," any more than a few tantrums, some embarrassing table behavior, a flat tire, or missed plane connections should. Your experience of your vacation is in your own hands.

6.Allow times and places for children to work off their energy. Plan breaks during long car trips. Take them for a run on the beach before you go to the art museum, or turn them loose in the courtyard after the hotel dinner with Great Aunt Betty.

7.Keep to a strict schedule regarding naps, bedtimes and meals to improve their behavior. No matter how much fun they're having, children don't do well when too tired or too hungry.

8.Discuss expectations beforehand. Explain what you can, and what sort of behavior you expect in different circumstances. You can't cover everything, but you can cover a lot.

9.Be alert to their safety. Provide safety equipment � harness, car seat, life jacket. Bring along a first-aid kit. Because a vacation provides new situations, accidents are more likely to occur.

Last but not least, process after each vacation. Talk about what worked and what didn't. And don't forget the most important thing: Find out what everyone enjoyed the most. Be sure and go over the good times with the family, and make plans for more in the future, taking into consideration what you've learned.

July 27, 2004 -- In the US vacation rentals companies are treated with the same breath as any other travel company, but why is this not the case in UK and Europe? I've worked in this industry for nearly three years and I am also a subscriber of various internet magazines - when travel is the topic of conversation the same companies and travel agents are always mentioned, not one of the UK's top rental companies is ever mentioned.

With the increase in low cost airlines in Europe why is this you may ask. It's quite simple the Vacation Rental industry, or Holiday Rental industry as we call it in Europe does not have a governing body like travel agents have ABTA or ATOL, theres no central voice or communication with the travel industry. I think the need for something like this is long overdue it may also add weight to the industry as a whole, which I think often comes off as the "poor relation" in the travel world.

Worldwide Holiday Homes is working along with Vacation rentals experts in the US and Europe to launch such an association. A partnership where all property owners, holidaymakers and holiday rental companies can communicate and start to voice our opinions in the travel industry.
